Trying to do Wild Night on bass

Posted on

I like that riff that’s going on in Wild Night, so I thought I’d try it on bass. I found the whole thing tabbed out, which should make it easy, but really just shows how far I need to go in terms of speed and dexterity and timing and all that. But it does show an interesting relationship between the Em and G6 chords.

I’m putting that in the testimonials: “Thank you, Bryan, for making my life a living hell.” : ) But seriously I’m glad you’ve chosen to highlight this infectious bass riff that really (along with the brass) give “Wild Night” much of its charm and energy. There’s a lot in Van’s band sound, and his vocal performances, that make imitating so many of his songs over our heads, but it’d be cool to work up a more relaxed/acoustic take.

…and why not begin with bass!

This week’s assignment if you or someone chooses to accept it: post a basic track (preferably recorded with a metronome or a steady tempo) of a rhythm track for the song that others can download or record themselves playing along with.

Let’s see if we can’t institute a few of this semester’s early covers!
